Trail des Aiguilles Rouges

September 4, 2011 11:54 am

This epic trail run took place yesterday, with a 04:30am start time and weather looking good it was set to be a big day…..

The stats: 50km distance trail run with 4000m positive and negative elevation, the race ends with a 1700m descent into Servoz The vertical gain a long with the toughness of the terrain underfoot made this an event not to be underestimated.

We started from Place du Mont Blanc, Chamonix…..750+ head torches at the ready. Head out of town and straight into the first climb up to Flégere, following on to Le lac Blanc. A tough 1400m ascent in daylight, even more so by head torch. Then it’s down to Buet for the 1st time check of 4hrs.

After that its a long pull up to Refuge de la Pierre à Bérard and the Col de Salenton, where the terrain is enough to test the nimblest of feet. Then it’s time for another descent to the Pont d’Arlevé, with no time to rest before the last big climb up to Le Brevent, followed by a traverse across to Aigullette des Houches. What is left in your legs is needed for the 1700m drop down into Servoz. Dropping down to the valley floor, the welcome sound of the finish line  gets and extra spring in everyone’s step.

A great event, the volunteers at the stations looked after everyone so well. Weather and views were stunning, those combined with the camaraderie on the trail made it all worthwhile….same time next year!!
