Into the Clouds
As the sun starts beating down on the mountains, construction of a new 10 man lift has started at Grand Montets. The lift will have the capacity to carry 3500 passengers an hour and will run between the car park and the Plan Joran replacing the 4 man lift. This is part of huge investment by Compagnie Du Mont Blanc , which could see the construction of another two telecabins, two chairlifts and two beginner areas within the valley.
Since hosting the winter Olympics and the construction Des Glaciers cable-car in 1924 Chamonix has become an alpine mecca. The chairlifts, cable-cars and mountain railway give us all the chance to experience the truly breath taking scenery and landscapes around Mont Blanc with ease and in relative comfort. Though we take this for granted now it is only due to the pioneering spirit of mountaineers and engineers that Chamonix has become the town it is today.
The Aiguille du Midi is Chamonix's most famous lift, the present Aiguille du Midi cable-car was constructed over five summer seasons in the 1950's and remains one of the highest in Europe. This was after a previous attempt connecting Les Pelerins to the Col du Midi (3558m) via the Glacier des Bossons, the remnants of which can still be visited by foot, was deemed too dangerous a route.
A popular attraction running all year round (other than a short maintenance period in the Autumn) it boasts one of the highest restaurants in the world, an alpine museum and for the more courageous visitor the "Step Into the void" attraction will let you stand suspended by a clear glass box 1035m above the ground!
