Mountains Of Music
The Alps will come alive with the sound of music towards the end of this month. Starting proceedings is Fete de la Musique on June 21st. An event set up by the French Ministry for culture in 1992, it has the aim of uniting people from all backgrounds with live music and encourages artists to play for free and at public venues. Chamonix is famed for its party atmosphere and the good times often lead late into the night. If you are in the valley or close by check out Chamonix's Rue des Moulins to see some great performances from local musicians. A great way to spend the Summer Solstice!
Follow the fun to Montreux for the Jazz festival on the 4th to the 19th of July. During this two week event music lovers will have the chance to see and hear some huge names including Stevie Wonder, Outkast, Van Morrison, Goldfrapp and Ed Sheeran to name just a few of the acts secured for what is looking like another memorable year. The world famous festival brings together a rich and eclectic musical history with the captivating landscape of Lake Geneva. Originally held in the Montreux Casino; burnt down during Frank Zappa's 1971 performance, an event encapsulated by Deep Purple's "Smoke on the water". Performances now take place across eight different venues. There will be both free live music, notably "Music in the park" as well as ticket only events for the more popular artists. It's well worth trying to make it to Montreux even without tickets to soak up the atmosphere and see the many street performers and even boat deck performers that will be flocking to the Alps for the musical celebration.
It's back to Chamonix again on July 26th till August 3rd for the Cosmo Jazz festival. This festival is quite special as it brings the concerts to the top of the lifts and not just the town. With stages at Barrage d'emosson, Brevent, Grand Montets, Le Tour and Les Houches. You can enjoy these free concerts as a reward for a short hike or for the price of a lift pass. After the high altitude day time performances the town centre will become the centre of the party with acts playing on a stage in the town centre and at the Hotel Alpina near Place Du Mont Blanc.
