Latest News From Chamonix
Chamonix is gearing up for this year's Skyrunning Championships, Held on the 27th to the 29th of June. The event invites competitors from all over the world to put there fitness and determination to test against the formidable terrain that lies around Mont Blanc. Here's a rundown of the weekend's events.
There will be six races starting at different locations and times on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. With distances of 3km to 80km, there is a race suitable for many different running abilities.
Friday 27th June
Mont Blanc 80km
Whilst the majority of us are fast asleep! One thousand endurance runners will start the longest of the six races at 04:00am. With a vertical gain of +6000m and completion times breaking the 10 hour mark expect to see some very focused athletes at the start line in Chamonix's town centre.
Mont Blanc Vertical KM
This time trial will turn the mountain side under the Brevent lift turn into a 3.8km trail with the 400 entrants climbing 1000m in just over 30 minutes. Great views of this race from all around the valley, be sure not to miss the start at 16:00 in the town centre.
Saturday 28th June
Mont Blanc Cross
The Mont Blanc cross is a short trail event limited to 1500 runners. A 23km race with a vertical gain of around 1500m it is the longest of Saturday's events and will be starting at the Paragliding field.
Mont Blanc 10km
Described as a nature race, the 10km makes use of Chamonix's cross country ski trails and give 1000 participants of mixed abilities a good starting block into competitive running. Catch the beginning at the paragliding field at 0900.
Mont Blanc Mini Cross
Children's races starting at 1130 at the paragliding field with distances ranging from 800m – 3km. A great event for any budding trail runners.
Sunday 29th June
Marathon day will see 2000 runners leave the Town centre at 0700. The Marathon is 42km with a vertical climb of 2511m and drop off of 1490m. With the highest limited attendance out of the 6 events there will be a lot of tired faces by the evening.
