As the leaves on the trees turn a rich golden colour, crisp mornings are followed by warm afternoons. Chamonix is a special place to visit any time of year. If you enjoy being up the mountain during the summer, but want to avoid the crowds, the autumn is a great time to visit the region and enjoy a moment of tranquility in breath taking scenery.
And we can make getting here easy…just call the Peak Transfer team with your flight details and we can organise a shared or private transfer for you from Geneva to the door of your accommodation in Chamonix!
There may be a more chilled-out vibe in town, but there are still lots of activities to do whether you’re here for the weekend or longer.
Aiguille du Midi
In just 20 minutes the Aiguille du Midi cable car takes you to 3842m where you have uninterrupted views of Mont Blanc and the French, Swiss and Italian Alps.
The cable car between Chamonix and the Aiguille du Midi is in 2 stages. The first stop is at Plan de l’Aiguille at 2310m. Just 5 minutes’ walk away is Refuge du Plan where you can enjoy stunning views of the Chamonix valley and opposite peaks of the Aiguille Rouges whilst tucking into a great lunch! From here you can hike along Balcon Nord to the Montenvers site. It is a magnificent traverse.
The second cable car takes you to the Aiguille du Midi (3842m) where facilities have been upgraded and visitor information has been enhanced. You can’t visit Chamonix without going up the Aiguille du Midi, so keep an eye on the weather forecast during your stay and go up on a clear day.
Montenvers rack railway line was completed in 1909. The track starts in Chamonix and winds its way through the forest line reaching the Montenvers site in about 20 minutes. At Montenvers, the Mer de Glace is France’s largest glacier and is accessible over 300 steps. It is over 7km long and each year ice caves are re-carved to take visitors into the glacier.
At Montenvers site you can either lunch at the railway station café or try a traditional Savoyard meal in the Grand Hotel which was built in 1880. The hotel, which is steeped in history, has 9 rooms and continues to offer accommodation to mountaineers and travellers. You certainly get a sense of history at this site.
Plan Praz, Brevent
With stunning views of Mont Blanc you can take the gondola lift to Plan Praz (1999m) this autumn. Brevent lift to Plan Praz is open from 27 October to 11 November. From Plan Praz there are some great days out! You can hike to Lake Cornu or along the Grand Balcon Sud. Why not hire a mountain bike and kit, and take on some of the awesome downhill biking on offer.
The Aiguille du Midi and Plan Praz have fantastic take-off areas for paragliding. You can go on a tandem paraglide all year round. No experience is necessary so it is the perfect adventure. The views and feeling as you fly over the Chamonix valley are amazing.
