A short break can be just as gratifying as a whole week on the slopes if you know how to make the most of it. When a long ski holiday just isn’t on the cards, whether due to work commitments, needing a quick ski fix before the main event later in the season or just the legs are not as equipped to take a whole week of abuse like they used to. It certainly doesn’t mean that you have to stay home and miss out on all the fun. Why not get your work-play balance right and book a weekend in the mountains or short ski break?
Short ski breaks and weekends are becoming more and more popular, particularly with increasing convenience of flights to Geneva, Lyon and Chambery from the UK. In less than a hop, skip and a jump you will find yourself on the slopes in no time if you choose the right resort. The question is how to achieve maximum days on the white fluffy stuff with minimum time out of the office. The secret lies with the resort and travel plans. Pick a resort with a short transfer time from an airport with vast flight choice. In Europe the most practical airport in terms of number of flights per day from all major (and some smaller) UK airports, proximity to major resorts and less affected by alpine weather has to be Geneva International Airport. That’s why Peak Transfer recommend the following resorts as the top ski weekend destinations in the Alps when wanting to make the most of your quick ski getaway this winter.
Chamonix is proving to be one of the most popular ski weekend destination having everything you would want for a fantastic short break in the Alps. Stunning views, exceptional skiing terrain and lively atmosphere. What also makes it the perfect weekend getaway is its short flight time from the UK (~75-90 minutes to Geneva) and even shorter transfer to the resort which is approximately an hour by road. This ensures maximum time skiing and minimum time wasted travelling. However, there is more to Chamonix than just its convenience. Think diverse good food, fantastic entertainment and lively apres scene and that’s before we even consider its incredible ski reputation. To find out more check out our Chamonix Nightlife Guide and Best Places to eat.
Chamonix offers varied pisted terrain and endless off-piste opportunities, argued to be some of the best in the world. The lifts are open from early December to late April and are pretty snow sure late season. For more information regarding Chamonix’s Ski Areas and Ski Passes and other activities available on our blog.
Book your reliable low-cost door-to-door private transfer to Chamonix for as little as €185 for up to 8 passengers with Peak Transfer.
Courmayeur can be found just over the other side of Mont Blanc from Chamonix but offers a rather different experience. With just a short trip through the Mont Blanc Tunnel the glorious sun-kissed Italian slopes of Courmayeur will suddenly appear before your eyes. This charming, traditional mountaineering and spa-town boasts pretty pedestrianised cobbled streets, chic designer boutiques and stylish cocktail bars. In true Italian style you can expect a friendly atmosphere, exceptional food (both on and off the mountain) and pleasant skiing. Courmayeur is perfect for a romantic ski getaway, a quick snow fix amongst friends and colleagues or even a short ski break with the family.
If you want to relax, enjoy a good glass of vino and eat well between bouts of beautiful skiing in spectacular scenery then this is the resort for you! At only 90 minutes by road from Geneva before you know it you will be getting on with the important things on a winter getaway: eating, drinking and skiing!
The resort itself might not be as large as the Chamonix ski area but the compact resort packs a punch in terms of challenging on piste and off-piste terrain without the crowds. That said Courmayeur does have terrain more suitable for intermediate and novice skiers too. If ultimate luxury is what you are after then Megeve cannot be beaten for a short ski break. Brimmed with swanky 5-star luxury spa hotels, extravagant fully catered chalets, michelin starred restaurants both on and off the mountain it attracts an elite clientele. Therefore, it comes as no surprise this is not the cheapest resort around but if you are not wanting to compromise experience for a tighter budget then Megeve should be at the top of your wish list.
Megeve is very much a traditional Haute-Savoie village surrounded by working farms. A beautiful village with striking baroque architecture, cobbled traffic-free centre lined with high end fashion boutiques, cafes, restaurants and jazz bars.
If skiing is just the tip of the iceberg on your long weekend getaway then Megeve has a lot going for it. Megeve is part of the Evasion Mont Blanc ski domain and has terrain to suit all abilities. Long roaming greens perfect for playing with the family or any novice skiers. An abundance of cruising blues and challenging red runs. But don’t be fooled, for the advanced skier there is a number of steep blacks and untracked powder through the trees and on the rolling slopes for days after fresh snowfall. Although, one of the lower lying resorts around it tends to be pretty snow sure with ski terrain up to 2,400m.
Another great reason why Megeve is perfect for a quick luxurious getaway is its proximity to Geneva airport. At just over an hour by road along the Autoroute Blanche you can really make the most of your weekend away by cutting the commuting time. For more information about the Skiing in Megeve or a guide to the best restaurants check out the Peak Transfer Blog.

La Clusaz is probably the French’s best kept secret when it comes to the perfect ski weekend getaway. Close to the stunning Lake Annecy and less than 90 minutes from Geneva itself many French and Swiss take advantage of the exceptional ski terrain and hospitality on offer.
La Clusaz is a picture-perfect alpine village full of character and charm and unmistakably French!
Savoyard Fare is the name of the game so expect to be inundated with glorious cheeses, mouthwatering cured meats and divine French wines. The area is surrounded my cute alpine farms which can be seen on the winding alpine road into resort. Neighbouring Le Grand Bornand is founder for the regionally famous Reblochon cheese, an inescapable inclusion on every restaurant menu in the region from tartiflette (a must try by the way) to raclette.
La Clusaz on its own offers just 132 km of ski terrain but is conveniently linked to a number of the Aravis resorts including Manigod, Le Grand Bornand, St Jean de Sixt. All four are covered by the Aravis lift pass, and amount to a more versatile 220 km of terrain. Mostly well‑groomed intermediate and advanced slopes to offer, but the resort pulls out all the stops with its dedicated avalanche protected freeride area and comprehensive snow parks.
With plenty of traditional chalets, apartments and of course hotels means that there is plenty of choice for those looking at more flexible dates rather than the typical week long chalet booking. Most are well located and provide exceptional views of the surrounding Aravis ranges. Perfect for the ultimate short ski break. For more information about La Clusaz Ski Area and the resort itself check out our La Clusaz and Le Grand Bornand Winter Guide.
