The first smells of autumn are here in the Chamonix valley….it has barely been a few days since the buzz of the UTMB week with all its energy and vibrancy. Yet already you can feel the quietness of the trails as summer slips into autumn.
This is one of my favourite times of year in Chamonix, you still get some amazing blue sky weather days but with less people around you can quickly find your own piece of mountain nirvana whether walking, running or mountain biking.
The mornings and evenings have a definite nip in the air so you need to bring some layers with you for a full day out. The colours as the season changes are break taking and your efforts are quickly rewarded with stunning autumnal vistas and smells. You may also find yourself a lot closer to the local wildlife at this time of year as Chamois & Ibex retreat from the ever lowering snowline.
If you are still not done with the summer’s exertions then the TAR (Trail des Aigulles Rouges)www.aiguillesrouges.fr is a great end of season trail run.
The course route varies each year but it is generally 50km in distance with 4000m +/- to tease out the very last of your stamina! This year’s subscription is complete but they do release an extra 50 places today to the lucky few!!
You will find the town of Chamonix also has a more relaxed rhythm to it with locals catching up with each other having had the business of summer pass. There are still plenty of bars and restaurants open in September and October…Sat outside Elevation watching the sun and snowline drop you can’t help but start to think of winter days and what they will bring……
