When the mince pie overdose and leaden winter skies start to take their toll, there is nothing better than heading to the mountains for a Christmas holiday to remember. Only a few short hours from your doorstep you can find yourself immersed in a winter wonderland where the snow and magical atmosphere provide the perfect festive backdrop.
We truly are spoiled for choice as many resorts pull out all the stops to entice Christmas skiers to their slopes. Christmas markets, firework displays and special menus abound, ensuring that you won’t be sorry to have ditched the usual slump on the sofa binging on Christmas TV! There’s really no better way to revitalize yourself for the New Year ahead than with a wonderful slice of Alpine festivity. Here are a few of the standout resorts to consider:
Nothing says traditional more than Austria with its chocolate box architecture, charming old school feel, hearty food and of course breathtaking mountains to explore. Kitzbuhel is a real jewel in the crown and has deservedly won the ‘world’s best ski resort’ award no less than three times.
When it comes to the festive season, it’s really no holds barred and from the end of November when Advent begins right through to the New Year, Kitzbuhel truly comes to life. The imaginative walkable Advent calendar along the pretty streets of Reith bei Kitzbuhel is well worth a visit with a new window opened every day and remaining on view until the 6th Jan. The fabulous Christmas market is wonderful to stroll around right up until Christmas Day sipping on the delicious local mulled wine with entertainment from local choirs. The campfires, storytelling and pony rides are perfect for the kids and one not to miss is the magically decorated Christmas tree forest in Rasmushof at the foot of the Streif racecourse.
If you are lucky enough to still be on holiday as the New Year rolls around, you are in for a treat as the truly spectacular fireworks and torchlit parade are a sight to behold and have been wowing locals and visitors alike for over 60 years.
For a winter break in the Haute Savoie look no further than the delightful village of La Clusaz and its smaller neighbour, Le Grand Bornard. With an enviable snow record over the festive period, La Clusaz is a wonderful choice for a classic Christmas on the slopes. The scenery is beautiful with the imposing 2750-meter high Pointe Percée peak towering dramatically over the resort and there are over 84 carefully groomed pistes to explore.
Now in its 20th year, one of the best things to hit La Clusaz at this time of year is the ‘Les Pestacles du Pere Noel’ festival. One of the premier Christmas events in the mountains, this weeklong party sees street entertainers, storytellers and magical concerts bringing the streets to life. Christmas Eve is a particular highlight as Father Christmas arrives in town via a torchlit descent from the mountain top followed by fireworks and festivities in the main square.
Another bonus for families is that early bookers can take advantage of free ski passes for the under 12’s over the festive fortnight so a good excuse to get plans in place good and early.
For a real touch of Christmas class, look no further than Verbier for your festive break, the most stunning of Swiss resorts. The snow levels in late December average out at 150cms so you can be sure of some fabulous skiing but when it comes to the après ski and nightlife at this time of year, you are really onto a winner, Verbier truly offers it all for a most magical Christmas break.
The delightful Christmas market is an absolute must and a great place to pick up those last minute gifts while soaking up the festive ambience. The town goes out of its way to welcome visitors and set the stage for the most traditional of Christmases. The kids will love the husky rides as well as the chance to try snow shoeing or go for a stroll with the St Bernards. For the more daring, there is plenty of hairy tobogganing to try and the beautiful skating rink is an all time favourite.
For gastronomes Verbier is fabulous with all kinds of delicious celebratory food on offer. Many of the local chefs create special festive menus and you can even hunt out a traditional turkey Christmas lunch if you want a slice of home.
You can be sure of a classy Christmas in Courchevel, one of the most stylish resorts in Europe, if not the world. The streets are beautifully illuminated and there are parades and events out on the streets to keep the skiers entertained over the festive weeks. The emphasis here is much less on the commercial aspect of the holidays and more on packing in some truly fine skiing with your nearest and dearest. At the heart of the 3 valleys with over 600kms of immaculately groomed pistes to explore, this magnificent ski area stays open every day over the holiday period and it’s not unusual to see the odd skiing Santa.
Off the slopes, the town makes every effort to create a wonderful Christmas atmosphere. At Courchevel 1850 there’s a dazzling light show every evening at 6pm with music and street entertainers to get the party going and of course regular appearances from Father Christmas.
Kids will love the chance to overindulge at the nightly Chamallow parties in Courchevel Village – toasting marshmallows on an outdoor fire, what’s not to like! For older kids and adults alike, the torchlit descent will be a real highlight and the fireworks displays draw crowds from miles around.
If you are lucky enough to stretch your break into the New Year, Courchevel also lays on a fabulous party in early January to celebrate the Russian Orthodox Christmas with more fireworks and live Russian music, one not to miss.
