Peak Transfer is owned and operated by John Friel. This is my mountain story….it’s a little bit longwinded so bear with me…….
I have been a massive Winter Sports fan since my first skiing trip at the age of 14; it was a world away from my urban roots in the UK. That first trip fuelled what went on to become a lifelong passion for all things outdoors. In the following 10 years I travelled to many of the world’s ski destinations, working winter seasons in Austria, France and the Southern Hemisphere.
In 1996 working a winter season in Wanaka, South Island, New Zealand I met an Australian surfer and snowboarder who told me about his plans to head to Chamonix the following Northern Hemisphere winter. I didn’t make that year but was regaled by all the stories of epic steeps and endless backcountry.
I finally arrived in Chamonix in ‘99 to see for myself what all the stories were about. The place did, has and always will blow me away. Chamonix, to me is the Marmite of mountain towns, you either love it or hate it, if you love it then there is nowhere on earth to compare. Its unique blend of Mountain sports and lifestyle create a vibe that I have never found anywhere else.
That particular year saw some amazing conditions but also (sadly) its share of tragedy from the Mont Blanc Tunnel fire to the avalanche in Le Tour.
After the winter of 1999 I returned to the UK but Chamonix was (always in my thoughts) never far from my mind. I returned for the following 2 winters and in 2002 setup Endless Descents. With a business plan written on a napkin(!) I rented a chalet for the winter and headed to Chamonix for the season. To say I underestimated the workload would be a fair assumption! Many lessons learned and good times had. The next 3 years were certainly a crash course in the world of winter sports business. I made a few basic errors in the early days, such as not understanding the importance of making money….think dumb-and-dumber-do-ski-chalets…with my 30th approaching and real life looming I returned to the UK to reform the plan.
I still had a house in the UK and having come to the conclusion that the model of renting chalets was somewhat floored (a hefty study based on 3 winters of no money….) decided it really was now time to “bet the farm”. So in December 2004 with UK house sold, Chalet Chocolat bought, Endless Descents has continued to thrive year on year with Chalet Chocolat as it’s home.
I used to use transfer companies for Chalet guests but when the regulations changed it meant I could no longer run my own minibuses for daily hill runs. Time to take on the transfers directly. Off I went on an incredibly exciting 10 day course in National and International Passenger Road Transport. Several brain aches later, course passed, certificates issued…Peak Transfer was born!
Peak Transfer is not the biggest transfer company in the world but what we are is a Chamonix based Transfer Company that is owned and ran by people who love and live in the mountains. It is important to us that everyone who comes to work for us shares that passion.
An airport transfer, let’s be honest is not the most important part of your holiday or trip, but it is the first contact you have on arrival and we want it to be a positive one. Do we always get it right? Certainly not, but what you will get from us is real endeavour to correct mistakes and take responsibility for the level of service we offer to you.
